Lawsuit Filed by Two New Plaintiffs Against Trevi and Boquitas Over Sexual Abuse

New lawsuits shed light on how power disparity between young artists and those who sought to exploit their talents can lead to abusive experiences.

As reported in Rolling Stone, a new pair of plaintiffs filed a lawsuit claiming they are survivors of an abusive system that saw pop star Gloria Trevi procure and manipulate vulnerable teens luring them into what amounted to a sadistic sex ring with Sergio Andrade. The lawsuit claims that Trevi, and her co-defendant Mary Boquitas, recruited the women knowing the horror that Andrade had planned for them.

The international scandal surrounding the sex cult led by Andrade and Trevi first erupted over 24 years ago. Since that time both Trevi and Andrade have served jail time and more survivors of their abuse have come forward. Recently, Trevi filed a lawsuit presenting her own allegations against Andrade, seemingly attempting to deflect responsibility for her role in the abuse.

Karen Barth Menzies, a lawyer who is representing the anonymous plaintiffs, highlighted to Rolling Stone how the significant age and fame differences between her clients and the defendants, including Trevi, reveal that “exploitation of a power disparity is at the heart of these abuse cases, and it’s obvious who has the power.”

Attorney Barth Menzies is also on the team representing two other Jane Does who are also survivors of abuse at the hands of the Andrade-Trevi clan. One of them is the older sister of one of the new victims.

“The lawsuit filed by Trevi amounts to victim-blaming,” stated Barth Menzies. “This case highlights the significant power dynamics often present in sexual assault cases. Standing up for oneself requires immense courage, and the litigation process can be traumatic. We are proud to stand with our clients through every step of this challenging journey, no matter the circumstances.”

These lawsuits shine a light on the darker aspects of the music industry, exposing the exploitation and abuse that lurk beneath all the glamour. As these cases progress, they highlight the critical need for systemic change and survivor empowerment to challenge those who have abused their power.
